標題の表現については、以前若い頃に、苦～い経験をしたことがあります。ＡＬＴとティーム・ティーチングをやった後で、“So much for today’s lesson.”と言って教室を後にしたところ、オーストラリア人のＡＬＴが、「その表現を使うと、先生は授業がいやでいやでようやく終わってやれやれだ、という否定的なニュアンスを伴う表現だから、“That’s all for today.”という方が無難だ」という意味の注意を受けました。私はこの句を、「～は終わり」という単純な理解をしていたんです。当時は辞書のどこにもそのようなことは書いてなかったので、意外な注意に驚いたことをはっきりと記憶しています。その後、１９９７年の『英語教育』５月号のＱ．Ｂ．において、故・小西友七先生が、読者からの質問を受けてこのことを明快に解説されました。私も『ライトハウス英和辞典』（研究社）の編集委員として、アルジオ博士（John Algeo）に直接確認を取り、次のようなご回答をいただいています。この句の実態がよく分かりますね。

　   “That’s all for today” is normal. “So much for today” in the same sense is not. Indeed the latter is another idiom altogether. “So much for that subject” = I have said all about that subject I am going to say; I do not wish to and will not say anything more; or We have exhausted that subject; there is nothing more to be said about it. “That’s all for today” means we have reached the end of the allotted time, not that we have reached the end of the subject. “So much for…” has a negative implication.

  　used to express disappointment at the fact that the situation is not as you thought it was : The car’s broken down again. So much for our trip to the seaside.―Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. 4th edition.

  　spoken    said when a particular action, idea, statement,  etc. was not useful or did not produce the result that was hoped for :  She wouldn’t discuss it. So much for trying to compromise.  ―Longman Dictionary of American English.  5th edition.

　最新刊の『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第６版、大修館）には、次のような新しい語法注記が入りました。参考になりますね。♥♥♥

　so much for O は不満や失望を表すので、授業の終わりにSo much for today.と言うと「授業は思ったほか成果が上がらなかった」という意味となる。授業の終了の意の「おしまい」は That’s all for today.かThat’s all I have for today.と言えばよい。
