attempt V-ing~竹林先生の見識

 かつての『ライトハウス英和辞典』(研究社)に、こんな用例が挙がっていました。私はこの辞典の編集委員を務めております。問題は(c)の語法です。

(a) The prisoners attempted an escape. = (b) The prisoners attempted to escape. = (c) The prisoners attempted escaping.

●Della Summers(ロングマン辞書部編集長) I agree that (c) is a good deal more unusual than (b), certainly in British English as well as American English. I am not sure whether it merits a usage note , however, as I do not know what the rationale behind your usage notes is.

●J.B.Sykes (オックスフォードCOD編者) (b) is normal, (c) very unusual.

●Robert Copeland (メリアムウェブスター編集部) We find no evidence in our citations of the verb attempt followed by a participle. Our only examples are for attempt with a “to infinitive” and attempt with a noun phrase(“we have attempted an analysis…”)

●Robert K. Barnhart (WBD編者) Item (b) may be the more frequent usage in American English and perhaps in British English as well. As the citations under definition 1 in Oxford English Dictionary show, attempt can take the infinitive or the noun of action. While use of the gerund occurs, it can in some circumstances sound forced

●P.Y.Su (ランダムハウス辞書部編者) As you say, (b) is more common than (c).

●Dwight Bolinger (言語学者) Yes.
