funny uncleという英語表現をご存じでしょうか？大学生の時に、初めてこの表現に出会った時に、さっぱりわからずに困ったことを覚えています。当時、英語辞典・百科事典を見ても、何のヒントもなく途方に暮れました（当時はインターネットなどもありませんから）。毎日、アメリカの悩み相談の“Ann　Landers”をAsahi Evening Newsで読む中で、そのヒントが分かり、少しずつ実態が見えてきました。決して、志村けんさんのような「変なおじさん」ではありません。私の集めた以下の用例の一部をご覧ください。

     I’m talking about child sexual abuse, incest and rape by their parents, stepparents, “funny” uncles and neighbors. 　―The Akron Beacon Journal, May 17, 1984.

     Most parents are too embarrassed (or uninformed) to deal with subjects like masturbation and “Funny Uncles” Yes, even in these “enlightened” times.　―”Ann Landers,” November 3, 1978.

     A 15-year-old girl is more of a woman than a child. She is old enough to tell a stepfather, a boyfriend or a Funny Uncle to keep his peapickin’ hands off her body―if she really wants them kept off.―”Ann Landers,” September 3, 1974.

     I want to thank you for openly discussing all human problems―homosexuality, masturbation, abortion, infidelity, kinky sex, sadism, shoplifting, teenage pregnancies, venereal disease, alcoholism, medical problems, drug addiction, wife-swapping, child abuse, “funny uncles”―every conceivable aspect of life. ―”Ann Landers,” February 25, 1980.

     We looked in the Ann Landers Encyclopedia for help under “Molest” and “Funny Uncles,” and we couldn’t find anything. ―”Ann Landers,” November 6, 1979.

     You have helped me understand homosexuality, masturbation, obsessive-compulsive behavior, abortion, kinky sex, transvestism, “funny uncles,” medical problems, emotional problems, sibling rivalry, and made it possible for me to get along with my relatives, neighbors and friends.　―”Ann Landers,” November 24, 1983.

     You have printed many letters about child molesting, “Funny uncles,” etc.―”Ann Landers,” January 7, 1984.

     Say nothing until they come to visit. Then, take that funny uncle side and make it abundantly clear that if you catch him looking sideways at your daughter you will tell the entire family  about his attempt to seduce her. ―”Ann Landers,” February 16, 1985.

　ここまで読むと、何となくその正体が見えてきましたね。次のAnn Landers女史の回答を読むと、その正体が一層はっきりと分かります。

　A “Funny Uncle” is NOT A HOMOSEXUAL. He is a relative who sexually abuses young children. Almost always such a person is heterosexual―as any professional who has dealt with these situations will tell you.　―”Ann Landers,” Dec.19, 1978.

　アメリカ人の中には、こんな表現聞いたことがない、という人や、「変人」（eccentric）あるいは「ホモ」（gay）のことではないかと誤解している人もいるみたいですが（そのような定義もないわけではありません cf. Urban Dictionary）、funny uncleというのは通例、“a common euphemism used to refer to a male relative who engages in improperly sexual behavior with younger relatives. Often it refers to  behavior that is not overtly sexual, is felt to have sexual undertones or motivation”　という意味の婉曲語法です。イギリス英語ではアメリカ英語ほど一般的ではありませんが、使われてはいるようです。恩師の故・安藤貞雄先生には、このように、ある表現の実態を映す良い用例を集めることの大切さを教えていただきました。「良い用例を集めただけでも賞賛に値する」とおっしゃっておられました。

　先日このブログでも紹介した、私が基礎原稿を一人で書き上げた『新リトル英和辞典』（第５版、研究社、１９８７年）に（⇒コチラです）すでに、funny uncleと成句を見出しに立て、「親類の子どもに性的いたずらをする男」として収録しています。もちろん、上記のような用例の蓄積に基づいて、原稿を書きました。現在の辞典でもこの句を拾っているものはあまりありませんから、３３年も前の当時、画期的なことだったことが感じていただけるかと思います。辞典の仕事というのは、かくも大変なことなんです。私は若い頃はほとんど寝ずに、仕事に打ち込んでいました。♥♥♥
