教員になりたての頃、ペーパーバックをむさぼり読んでいた時期があって、面白いと思った表現は、すべてカードに書き留めておいたんです。たいがい辞書にも載っていない表現が多く、途方に暮れたものです。その時は分からなくても、チョット心の隅に留めておくと、ひょんなことから氷解するという経験をいっぱいしました。今ではなんていうこともない表現が、当時は新鮮だったものです。今日は、そんな一例をご紹介しましょう。次の用例をご覧ください。

　I smiled as I heard him say,"Two things, Detective Josephs : One, you
owe Mrs. Fletcher for the drink. Two, don't ever enter her room again
without her prior permission."  ―J.Fletcher, Meyhem.

　I was silent for a moment. "But you married him," I said."Why?"
"There were three reasons. One, he was rich; two, he had the hardest prick 
I have ever felt; three, he asked me." She laughed.

　"What facts?" she said.
 "One," Reardon said, and began ticking them off on the fingers of his
left hand. "Mr.Dodge had lunch that day at a restaurant named Luna
Mare. It's my understanding that your firm wrote the contract for the 
purchase of that restaurant."  ―Ed McBain, Another Part of the City.

　当時の私は、このような列挙の仕方を聞いたことがありませんでした。そう思って英語を読んでいると、結構な数の用例が集まってきたんです。「列挙」のやり方として、次のようにまとめることができそうです。

(1) first... second... third...
(2) first... secondly... thirdly...
(3) firstly... secondly... thirdly...
(4) one... two... three...
(5) a... b... c...

　今話題にしているOne…Two…Three…はちょうど書き言葉の１…　２…　３…の話し言葉バージョンとまとめることができるかもしれませんね。（１）（２）（３）よりも、より口語的な表現と思ってよいでしょう。
