今日６月１９日（木）のＥＳＳの活動テーマは、“English Jokes”でした。ＡＬＴのジェーン先生が、生徒たちにぜひ読ませたいジョークを集めてくれて、一つ一つ読み合わせていきました。すぐ可笑しさのわかるものから、面白さがさっぱり分からないものまで、爆笑したり、シーンとしたり、さまざまな反応が面白かったですね。ジェーン先生の一番のお気に入りのジョークは次のものでした。

　　John wasn’t happy. He was very lonely. He said, “I will buy a pet.” He went to the pet shop. He didn’t want a cat or a dog. He didn’t want a bird or a fish. John wanted an unusual pet. “I’ll buy a centipede,” he said. The centipede lived in a small box. John took the box home. John liked his new pet. He said, “Do you want to go for a walk?” There was no answer. Again he said, “Do you want to go for a walk?” Again there was no answer. He put his face near the box and yelled, “You in there! Do you want to go for a walk?” A little voice from the box said, “Don’t shout. I heard you the first time. I’m just putting my shoes on!”

　お分かりですね。 このジョークではcentipede（ムカデ）がキーワードなんですが、英語でcentは「１００」を意味します。cent（１セントが１００個で１ドル）, century（１００年）, centimeter（１００センチで１ｍ）, percent（１００につきいくら？）は全て「１００」に関係しています。一方、pedeは「足」を意味します。pedal（ペダル）, pedestrian（歩行者）, expedition（探検）は全部「足」に関係しますね。したがってcentipedeは「１００の足」ということになって「ムカデ」という意味になっているんですね。そんな解説を加えておきました。期末試験まで、これで部活動はしばらく休止です。ジェーン先生の送別会（カンガルーの肉を食べる！）で、日本のジョークを、英語でジェーン先生にプレゼンするという宿題を各自がもらいました。
