９月に行われた「第１回ベネッセ・駿台マーク模試」（リーディング）の第１問Ｂに次のような英文が出題されました。生徒たちはそのまま素通りしてしまいましたが、私は今から３０年以上も前に、「オヤッ？」と思ったものです。こういう「アレッ？」という感覚を日頃から大切にするように生徒たちにはうるさく言っています。

 　 On day one everybody will do self-introductions in English to get to know the other members of the club.（初日は、クラブのほかのメンバーと知り合いになるために、英語で自己紹介をします。）

　設問では、On the opening day of the club everyone will [ 5 ].となっていて、上の部分が解答の根拠となっていました。the opening dayというのはday oneの「言い換え」ですね。

 　ここに出てくるday oneというのは、「初日」という意味です。Day Oneと大文字で書いたり、day 1と数字で書くこともあります。単に日付を表すだけでなく、あるプロジェクトや活動が始まった「最初（の日）」、あるいは新たな取り組みがスタートした日を表します（Day One is a term that refers to the first day of a certain period or activity. If is often used to denote the start of a new project , endeavor, or phase in one’s life. For instance, it could be used to refer to the first day of a new job or the start of a diet.)。若い頃、毎日定期購読していたアメリカの新聞にはしょっちゅう出てくる表現でした。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第６版）には「from day one　最初から」という成句が収録してあります。私が今から３０年以上も前に、「アレッ？」と思った証拠を挙げてみましょう（当時の私は、てっきりthe first dayと言うものだと思っていたんです。もちろんこれでもＯＫですが） 。コツコツと用例カードに記録していました。

(1)  “Since Day One in the tax code, we’ve had a consumer use tax you are obligated to pay if the retailer doesn’t,” said the cordial tax-assistance specialist.   ―USA Today, May 18, 1989.

(2)  Michael Francis’ spirit was crushed out with his cigarette Sunday―Day 1 of a ban on smoking on most U.S. flights.  ―USA Today, February 27, 1990.

(3) The globe has been slowing steadily since Day One, which means the days, defined as one complete rotation of the Earth about its axis, have been getting longer.   ―San Francisco Examiner, April 1, 1990.

(4) Marshall “has been laying since day one,” added Hankins, a 12-year veteran named in 1988 as his section’s officer of the Year by the Detroit Police Officers Association.  ―USA Today, August 3, 1990.

(5) Bliss says the ROE have been “clarified and amplified, not changed,” and says the exception giving pilots the right to fire when he believes his life is in imminent danger “has been true since day one.”  ―USA Today, September 14, 1990.

(6) He has said his first criteria would be selecting someone who would be ready from Day One to be president―a standard he argues Quayle fails.  ―USA Today, July 3, 1992.

(7) From day one, an angry black community has stressed similarities in the King and Denny incidents.  ―USA Today, July 27, 1993.

(8) “I have been the biggest Blue Jays fan since Day 1, but I’ve had it with them and their millionaire ballplayers.”  ―USA Today, August 19, 1994.

(9)  “Shut up for a minute, will you, Randolph!” Jeffrey yelled. “And let me tell you something. I’ve had a full appreciation of the seriousness of this affair from day one. If anyone has erred in that regard it is you, not I. You lawyers think of this as all a game, all in a day’s work…”  ―Robin Cook, Harmful Intent（１９９０）.

　ところが今でも和英辞典で｢初日」を引くと、全てが判で押したように「the first [opening] day」と出ています。day oneという表現は見ることができません。松江北高のアメリカ人ＡＬＴのコリン先生によれば、日本に来てから聞くのはthe first dayばかり。アメリカにいる頃はday oneとthe first dayは同じくらい使われていた。the opening dayという表現は、この中でも“the least common”とのこと。意味の違いはほとんどないが、day oneの方は何かのイベントやプログラムの初日という感じがする、との観察を述べられました。このたび出た『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館）の最新版の６版から、「We faced trouble from day one[Day One].（私たちは初日から問題に直面した）」という用例が新たに追加されました。これを応用すると、｢２日目」はday 2、｢３日目」はday 3と言うことができます。模擬試験を解きながら当時の懐かしい思い出を振り返ってみました。♥♥♥
